Frans Smit

 

Frans Smit was born in Stellenbosch, South Africa in 1976. After he finished school, he studied science at Stellenbosch University. Although a keen interest in the sciences, he decided to study in a field with more creativity and so ended up at the Freestate Technicon to study photography. After completing four years, he moved to London where he furthered his interest in the creative arts and followed various courses in painting at institutions like Chelsea College of Art and Design, City Lit and the prestigious Central Saint Martins. Currently Frans Smit is working as a full time artist from the Eastside Studios in Woodstock, Cape Town. He was shortlisted for the Absa l’atelier prize in 2008 and 2010. In 2013 he received first prize at the Queensplate ‘moments’ competition and a merit award at the Vuleka Art Awards.

Smit is represented by Maddox Gallery in London, Galerie Wolfsen in Denmark and Art in the Yard, Franschhoek, South Africa.
